I have truly liked other books by Chevalier, so I found this one a bit disappointing. I never got involved in the characters or felt like I knew them or cared what happened to them.

It was far too much of an outside-looking in story for me. It seemed false to weave Blake into this novel, as if she couldn't proceed without a historic figure and she had picked him out of a hat.

Sep 14, Allie Riley rated it liked it. I felt that she should have picked either Philip Astley or William Blake as her focus - attempting them both diluted the impact somewhat.

She could, for example, have really dealt with the Dissenters issue in more depth had she just written about William Blake.

I think there would have been more dramatic tension that way and a far more entertaining novel. As it was, despite the flowing prose, I found this an effort to read.

Nowhere near as good as "Girl with a Pearl Earring", in m Disappointing. Nowhere near as good as "Girl with a Pearl Earring", in my opinion.

More's the pity. Jun 07, Jane rated it it was amazing Recommends it for: Lucy. As with the other two I found this an enjoyable and easy read.

A thoroughly good read which made me want to next read a non-fiction book on William Blake who is one of the characters in Burning Bright.

Unlike Chevalier other works this novel did not as clearly develop the primary historical character William Blake or the link between the action of the story the creation of his work Songs of Experience, Songs of Innocence.

The story was unfocused. There were too many characters and too many subplots. Chevalier's other works are far superior.

Jul 04, Beth Bonini rated it liked it Shelves: historical , journey , london. I've really enjoyed several of Chevalier's novels - especially The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Remarkable Creatures - but for some reason, and despite its wealth of historical detail, this one never really came to life for me.

I plodded along with it for weeks, always waiting for it gain momentum, and it never did. I would rate it somewhere between 2. It promises revolution - the French Revolution is taking place in the background - I've really enjoyed several of Chevalier's novels - especially The Girl with the Pearl Earring and Remarkable Creatures - but for some reason, and despite its wealth of historical detail, this one never really came to life for me.

It promises revolution - the French Revolution is taking place in the background - but never quite delivers.

The poet William Blake is a character in it, but ultimately a rather shadowy one. But for all of its sometimes vivid scenes of London life, not much seems to happen.

I enjoyed the scenes involving Philip and John Astley- and their equestrian circus acts - but despite the latter's scoundrel behaviour, these real-life Londoners mostly just provide a bit of colour.

The novel felt like a series of snapshots - scene, scene, scene - that have to stand in for an actual plot.

It's pleasant enough, especially if you are fascinated by this time period in history, but it never really goes anywhere.

Oct 29, Chris rated it liked it. This book overall and unfortunately, fell flat for me. It was just an okay read. What was of interest and kept me reading, was that there was a circus element in the story and the family of which the book was about, got sucked into the magic and promise of the circus boss and the atmosphere.

If it were not for the circus thread running throughout the entire book, I might not have forced myself to finish the book; I have a thing for the circus.

As it 2. As it was, there were some other engaging parts of the story, but not enough to propel a higher rating. I like this authors writing but feel that this particular one fell short of expectations.

Jan 13, Kira rated it did not like it. The utter lack of resolution, both in terms of character growth and in terms of historical detail, was extremely disappointing.

I can't say I expected anything better from the snailian pace; nor was I ready to forgive the author's annoying tendency to build one character to an emotional pitch of trauma, then leave off before that character can react and talk about another one who is even then idling languidly.

Like many of you, I was unimpressed with the way William Blake remained only a minor c The utter lack of resolution, both in terms of character growth and in terms of historical detail, was extremely disappointing.

Like many of you, I was unimpressed with the way William Blake remained only a minor character throughout, his views only an idle curiosity, and the childrens' influence on his work being--except for the practical matter of the mob--almost wholly absent.

I reached the last page actually, the last track on the CD with the exultant relief that the book wasn't going to get any better, I was never going to find out what would happen to any of the main characters, and I could finally begin reading something else!

It took a while to get into it and still I felt like I was waiting for more. The characters were good, if a little under-developed. I would have liked to know more about Mr.

Blake and his "revolutionary" ties. I would also like a little more emotion from Jem and Maisie. This book was not as good as "Girl with a Pearl Earring", so I was a little disappointed.

I was left thinking "that was it? It got better in the This was a good story, but didn't have the most captivating plot.

It got better in the end, but I still wasn't totally hooked. A quick and entertaining enough read. I still look forward to reading other books by Chevalier.

The most prominent characters in this story are "Jem" -- a boy of maybe 16 -- and a girl of the same age by the name of Maggie. The story begins in a small village in 18th century England and very soon moves to London, where Jem's family moves to find work.

Here, Jem meets Maggie, who shows him city ways but also comes to rely on his more stable and grounded personality. As I read this, I was appreciating Chevalier's research and thinking back to a couple of her other novels I've very much enjoyed, two of them being "Remarkable Creatures" and "Girl with a Pearl Earring".

Her books make such engaging reading by including interesting historical details. In "Burning Bright", Chevalier describes how women in the small village of Piddletrenthide did "buttony" -- the making of delicate buttons, at the rate of up to sixty a day, which were then sold to a "button agent" for a bit of money.

I also noted the details about the poet and illustrator, William Blake, who was included in the story as a neighbor, and this led me later to read more on the internet about him.

All in all, an interesting and well-written tale, though not a tremendous amount of mystery or action here. Still, I enjoyed the read.

I enjoyed this slice of late s London life. This follows a few young adults through a year in London. We get a taste of the times, no major drama, just a good feel for life in that year.

The catalyst for the book seems to be the poet William Blake whom we meet as well through his friendship with these kids. Tracy Chevalier presents us with a real and vivid kaleidoscope of London in the late 18th century, complete with a visit to William Blake's work rooms.

And it all makes for an interesting tale. Jem Kellaway and his family move from Dorsetshire to London at the invitation of Philip Aspley of the circus fame as his father Thomas was a carpenter and Aspley wants to employ him.

Circus life is fully explored as Thomas, with Jem as his assistant, become stage carpenters but there is all sorts of strife within the circus and the couple, plus sister Maisie, find themselves embroiled in it all.

Blake supports the French revolutionists and finds himself ostracised by fellow Londoners when he won't sign a petition but Jem and company take his side.

And later when Maisie comes a cropper, Blake is there to help out. Eventually Aspley moves on to Dublin for the winter, the Kellaways move back to Dorsetshire but Maisie stays behind.

When friend Maggie discovers her hiding away she escorts Maisie back to her family for them to look after her.

Great atmospherics in this tale about a family that moves from the county to the slums of London in As in the two other books of hers I read "Girl with a Pearl Earring" and "Remarkable Creatures" , Chevalier is marvelous in her ability to immerse the reader in another place and time.

The Kellaway's landlord is circus impresario Astley, who hires the Kellaway's father. Another tenant is the poet William Blake, who captivates the children with his poetry and art at a time when he is working on "Songs of Innocence and Experience.

Conversely, the children are called upon to help the Blakes, whose radical sympathies with the French Revolution brings them much hostility from the community concerned about a parallel threat to the British monarchy.

Jul 28, travelerblue rated it really liked it. Innocence and experience - opposites, or are we all in the middle of the river While she sleeps, the front door is opened, and an unknown person releases the tiger into the house.

When Kelly goes to the kitchen for a drink, she finds a note from John claiming that he has gone to the store. Returning upstairs, she sees the tiger cross the foyer beneath her.

She discovers that all of the windows and doors have been boarded up, and she is trapped. She is horrified to find that Tom is missing from his bed, but she is unable to use the house phone to call for help, as the hurricane has brought down the phone lines.

After discovering her phone is not on the charger where it is supposed to be, she realizes that she might have dropped it down the laundry chute with her clothes.

She sneaks into the laundry room to retrieve it, and makes another attempt to contact emergency services; due to the high volume of calls, however, she is unable to do so.

She tries calling John, but his cell phone is in his car, which is parked outside of a bar. John is inside drinking beer and gambling.

Several close encounters follow between Kelly and the tiger; Kelly and Tom hide in John's study, with Kelly bleeding heavily as a result of her injuries from the tiger.

She barricades the door with a desk and bandages her leg. She soon discovers that John has taken out life insurance policies on both her and Tom, and intends to collect the money upon their deaths.

She finds a handgun, but there are only five bullets; she loads the gun and sneaks out into the hallway hoping to shoot the tiger, and tells Tom to go to the laundry room.

As the tiger approaches, she cocks the gun and fires, but the first chamber is empty and Kelly is forced to flee. In the laundry room, she is able to break the board-covered window and climbs out just as the tiger breaks in to the room and leaps to attack her.

She runs to her car, but as she is trying to start the engine, she remembers that Tom is still alone in the house with the tiger. She returns to the house and climbs back in through the window.

Upon finding Tom, she promises that she will never abandon him. She intends to lead him to the laundry room, but the tiger attacks. She then instructs Tom to climb into the massive chest freezer John had bought upon deciding to open the Safari Ranch, and she climbs into it as well.

Safe from the tiger, she hums a lullaby for Tom, and he falls asleep. The next morning, Kelly wakes to the faint sounds of drilling; John is removing the board from the front door.

Kelly and Tom climb out of the freezer and walk into the foyer to see John wielding a rifle, intending to kill the tiger.

You should have read the synopsis and thought "Hell yeah I need to see that". Two people a girl and her younger autistic brother are trapped in a house with a tiger, Awesome.

The tiger is there because their stepfather wants to start a safari park so he bought a tiger. Guess who he bought it from, Meatloaf, Awesome.

The Tiger is real for the vast majority of the time, Awesome. The movie is very well filmed and acted. The plot though ridiculous is still believable sort of , Awesome.

If your a Briana Evigan fan you'll love it. She spends nearly the entire movie in her underwear and at one point is soaking wet. The effects look good.

Barring one point where they look decidedly dodgy. But not to the point where your saying "oh my that looked dreadful". No you'll be saying "haha did you see that.

That was brilliant". The only way you wont enjoy this film is if you're some kind of movie snob, or a robot.

I'm sure even snobs and robots need to switch their brains of and just enjoy some mindless entertainment every now and then. So do just that and you'll enjoy yourself.
